British Columbia (BC) - Canada
British Columbia, often just known as BC is located on the western edge of Canada, with a coastline to the northern Pacific Ocean and Rocky Mountains to the east.
BC is Canada's third-most populous province, with Vancouver as the largest city by far (a population of 2,463,431 in the Greater Vancouver area c. 2016). Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada with a combination of English and French speakers and a large presence of other minority groups.
Vancouver is highly acclaimed for it’s quality of life and liveability, since 2011 the city has aimed to be the greenest city in the world by 2020. As a result, many conferences and games have been held there. The 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics were held in the city and the famous mountain resort of Whistler (only 125km away). In 2014 Vancouver became the permanent home to the popular TED conferences program.
British Columbia's rugged coastline is very similar to the Scandinavian countries of Europe. It stretches for more than 17,000 miles including many mountainous fjords and about 6,000 islands, most of these are uninhabited. Further inland the mainland is moderated by the proximity of the Pacific Ocean. There is a mixture of dry inland forests, canyon districts, boreal forests and the high mountain regions to both the north and south.
