The states capitol is Charleston but West Virginia's first Capitol city was located in Wheeling, Ohio County. It was later moved to Charleston, then back to Wheeling, and then back to Charleston. Once a frontier town and home to Daniel Boone, today Charleston is the historic, sophisticated capital of West Virginia and home to a variety of exciting cultural and recreational attractions. The State Capital, with its gleaming 23-karat gold dome and classic 20th-century architecture, is truly a sight to see. Most of the city's major landmarks are located right around the Capital, making it easy to see everything.
Charleston makes it easy to get out into nature. Start with Sunset Carriage Trail, a gentle one-kilometer trail designed for pedestrians. Head to Kanawha State Forest or Coonskin Park for more hiking and biking (the forest even has a pool).
