Alaska! (The Northern-most State)
Alaska is the largest US state with regards to area size. It is the northwest extremity of the United States, opposite Asia, across the Bering Strait. The state borders Canada by land and shares a marine border with Russia. Above is the Arctic Ocean and to the southwest the Pacific Ocean.
However despite it’s size the state is the 3rd least populated due to the harsh conditions and rugged terrain. Approximately half of the people living there are in the metropolitan areas surrounding Anchorage.
Alaska was occupied by various indigenous peoples for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. Using the land connection known as the Bering land bridge, the first non-native settlers were from Russia in the beginning of the 18th cent. However it was very expensive and far from the main center of Russian empire. As a result it was sold to the US in 1867 for $7.2 million.
Importance of Alaska
It formally became the 49th state of the US in 1959. While it has one of the smallest state economies in the country, Alaska's per capita income is among the highest due to the local resources of natural gas and oil.
The location, across the sea from Russia means it has significant military importance and as a result there is a number of large US armed forces based located there.
